What You Go'n Do When The Pressure's On

After what seemed like an unwarranted release of Butch Davis from the throne head seat with the UNC Football team, former Defensive coordinator and secondary coach, Everett Withers, has been appointed with the task of leading the upcoming 2011 football season.

Now I hate to be the one that brings race into play, but if Butch Davis' position wasn't safe, then there is NO TELLING what kinda scrutiny Withers is up against.   The scope through which Withers will be judged is biased - (as per usual, people will try to question his credentials and qualifications, yet this time he will be examined based on comparisons).  Withers, although hired as an interim coach, is the ONLY African American head football coach in the HISTORY of UNC Football.  

Some would argue that Withers has the set up with the job almost - falling in his lap (if you will).  However, many fail to examine his "road to glory"; but I guess at this point it doesn't really matter what he did to get here - he's here with a slew of people waiting to see if he will show up or fold on the tails of his Caucasian counterpart, Butch Davis.  Davis did many impressive things with the football program during his tenure - the one that seems to matter most is a winning season. 

So we shall see if Withers can give us some of the same success in the upcoming season.  Some of the most fitting thoughts come in the secular voice of up-and-coming came artist, J. Cole, "This Is Your Moment" or better yet, Young Jeezy's "What You Go'n Do When the Pressure's On".  Not many opportunities of this magnitude come overnight.  But rest assured that this opportunity brings with it a number of positive and negative weight.
